The Board of Trustees of the Sports Performance Reward Fund (SPRF), has set aside ten billion naira for sportsmen and women who have won in the Olympics, Commonwealth, and other international competitions.
SPRF said the plan is to attract more private sector interest in sports and foster a private sector led sports culture in Nigeria and make Nigeria a major sports power in the three Olympic cycles that will be possible. from
The President of SPRF, Musa Kida, said this in Abuja, during the first press conference, it is understood that funds will be raised from private and public institutions, from individuals and organizations in the home and abroad.
He said: “The SPRF plans to raise ten billion Naira from private and public sector, individuals and organizations at home and abroad to fund generations of young athletes. Nigeria has achieved podium success at the Olympics, Commonwealth, All Africa Games and major international competitions.
He noted that the sports industry is the second largest platform for motivation, activity and participation in the world after information technology.
It added, “As a nation with a lot of sporting talent and unemployed youth, we need to direct our youth’s interest in sports as a way to create wealth. So, obviously to us, the SPRF will open opportunities for employment for employees in sports facilities, sports clubs.
“There will be marketing and business opportunities for sports media and others to identify talents and recommend them to investors. The business world is advancing in the hope of a payoff later of investing time, energy and money.The payoff at the end of the sports value chain will certainly have the attention of the business world.
The expected prizes are as follows: Olympics: Gold -N10 million; Cash-N7.5 million; Copper – N5 million; Commonwealth: Gold- N5 million; Cash – N3 million; Copper – N2 million. All African Games: Gold – N3 million; Cash – N2 million; Copper -N1 million.
In her remarks, the first female Nigerian Olympic Gold medalist and member of the Board of Trustees of the SPRF, Chioma Ajunwa, said that she is the key to achieving sports.
He said: “All donations, donations and all forms of support will be done online and those that are not done online will be identified.
“All payments to beneficiaries are published on the website which is accessible to the public. The amount of money in the budget of the SPRF can be seen at any time on the website.
