SIM Blocking Deadline: FG, Telcos To Meet Over Court Ruling
While a Federal High Court that met in Lagos on Wednesday prohibited the Federal Government from blocking SIM cards not linked to NINs in April as planned, the Federal Government will now meet with telecom operators and other stakeholders in the sector.
Officials from the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and other key telecom stakeholders confirmed that the government was moving forward with the NIN registration and SIM card linking.
The planned disconnection of SIM cards not linked to NIN was to take place on April 6.
They further confirmed that the court decision would be considered at a meeting to be held before the expiration of the deadline (April 6, 2021).
A former second national vice president of the Nigerian Bar Association and human rights activist, Monday, Ubani, filed a motion asking the court to prevent the Nigerian Communications Commission from blocking all SIM cards not linked to NINs.
