Researchers Found New Evidence That Points To St Nicholas Who Inspired Christmas Santa Claus

Archaeologists in Turkey think they have discovered the sarcophagus that holds the remains of the saint who gave rise to the Kris Kringle mythology, while many children will be looking to the skies this Christmas in hopes of seeing a figure clothed in red.

Professor Ebru Fatma Findik, who leads the excavation team at the Department of Art History at Hatay Mustafa Kemal University, told Fox News that he and his colleagues “think we have found a sarcophagus to be in situ (original position) for the first time.”

The actual person who served as the model for Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, was a bishop in the fourth century in the ancient city of Myra, which is now Demre. According to certain historical accounts, he might have been laid to rest at a nearby “holy” area.

About 200 years after his passing in 343 CE, the relics of the bishop were transferred to St. Nicholas Church, which was built in his honor.

While excavating inside the medieval church building, Ministry of Culture and Tourism excavators said that they “encountered a surprise sarcophagus.”

Findik clarified, “We are working inside the two-story, 20-meter-long structure that borders the church courtyard from the south.” “This piece, which belongs to the group of sarcophagi that are not decorated, is composed of local stone and features a barrel roof that is a little elevated.”

“The discovery of a sarcophagus near the church, which is thought to be the resting place of St. Nicholas, could indicate that this site may indeed be the sacred area in question,” he told the Turkish news agency A News. We may state that we now have archaeological proof that supports historical accounts that the city’s sacred location is where St. Nicholas was buried.

“I’m happy to continue the excavation and restoration of the area where the sarcophagus is located and contribute to our country’s tourism,” Findik added, referring to his team of researchers.
