Reps Wade Into Greenfield University Students Abduction
On Tuesday, the House of Representatives pledged to liaise with relevant authorities to secure the release of the students from Greenfield University in Kaduna state.
The Speaker of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, made the pledge in plenary after a House delegation interacted with the protesting parents of students in Abuja.
On April 20, 2021, at least 23 students and staff were abducted by bandits in Kasarami Village, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Six of the abductees had been killed by the bandits, who also threatened to kill the remaining 17 students on May 4, if a N100 million ransom was not paid.
Briefing the House earlier, the delegation leader, Representative Benson Babajimi (APC-Lagos), said that the parents, who were dressed in black, appeared oppressed and dejected.
Gbajabiamila referred the matter to the House Special Committee on Security and said the House would immediately contact relevant authorities to secure their release.
Babajimi, who is the chairman of the House Defense Committee, said parents’ hope that their children will be released depends on parliament.
According to him, the parents are asking the House to intervene and ensure the return of their kidnapped children.
Babajimi urged the House to urgently intervene in the matter.
Meanwhile, one of the kidnapped students from Greenfield University, Kaduna, has been released.
Lauretta Attahiru, mother of the released student, confirmed the incident to reporters on Tuesday.
She, however, did not elaborate on how her son was released as she declined to speak at length about development.
