With mounting evidence against UNRWA, the U.N. agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, the U.S. is once again advocating for the establishment of a Palestinian state. This comes ahead of Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s sixth visit to the region since the start of the Hamas war last October.

Israeli forces have recently destroyed an underground weapons factory belonging to Islamic Jihad in Khan Younis, the second-largest city in Gaza. The factory was producing long-range missiles and anti-tank mines, among other weapons.

During the operation, Israeli soldiers discovered weapons, including Kalashnikov rifles and hand grenades, concealed in bags belonging to UNRWA (United Nations Emergency Relief Agency).

Israel has presented evidence implicating 12 UNRWA employees in the Hamas massacre that occurred on October 7. As a result, several countries have announced the suspension of aid to UNRWA.

According to Israeli claims, approximately 10 percent of UNRWA’s 13,000 employees are affiliated with Hamas or Palestinian Jihad, and about half of them are immediate relatives of Hamas activists.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with a delegation of UN ambassadors on Wednesday to provide them with evidence of the attack on Israel. During the meeting, he expressed his concerns about UNRWA’s close ties with Hamas, stating that the agency has served the militant group in various capacities.

Netanyahu expressed disappointment, as he had hoped for an objective and constructive organization to provide assistance in Gaza. However, he believes that UNRWA is not fulfilling this role and should be replaced by another organization or organizations.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is publicly advocating for the establishment of a Palestinian state as a solution to the Gaza conflict. This stance is being emphasized ahead of Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s upcoming visit later this week.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated that the U.S. actively supports the creation of an independent Palestinian state, accompanied by genuine security guarantees for Israel. This approach is believed to be the most effective way to achieve lasting peace and security for both Israel and the Palestinians, contributing to a more peaceful world.
