The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned drivers against speeding and speeding.
The corps has specially advised commercial drivers who are always on the road to be very careful and respect the traffic rules.
FRSC issued the warning on Friday in Ilorin during a sensitization talk on “Speed Thrills but Kills, Drive Responsibly and Avoid Overloading”, at Maraba Motor Park.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the program is an annual event to educate drivers and engage them in the use of the road to avoid accidents.
The Zonal Commander of FRSC, ACM Hyginus Omeje, said speeding is one of the main causes of accidents, explaining that there is a 30 meter distance between vehicles on the road.
The zonal director, represented by Mr Sadiq Ibrahim, Zonal Head of Operation, said that the recommended distance between moving vehicles is to prevent accidents when applying the fracture is sudden.
He advised motorists to always have a car while commuting, especially commercial drivers who travel long distances every day, saying it is very important to time of crisis.
“When a driver sits for a long time, it can result in tiredness, fatigue and pain, which makes the driver unable to fully control his car.
“It is necessary to rest during the car, especially long, can be relaxed and strong enough to drive the car,” he said.
The zonal director urged drivers to know their route and the condition of the road before starting any journey to know how to change their route to avoid accidents.
NAN reports that various groups of commercial drivers appreciated the program and promised to continue to remind their members to use the road and safety measures.
The Kwara Sector Commander of FRSC, Corps Commander Fredrick Ogidan, advised drivers against overloading and speeding to avoid accidents.
“Most of the time when such an accident occurs, the loads on the vehicle often add to the cause of the accident and make it difficult to rescue the victims.
“We understand that many people are traveling in the ember months, but it is necessary to know the limits of what the car can carry, while other goods are sent and delivered later, ” he said.
Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara, represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr John Olanrewaju, urged drivers to cooperate with FRSC personnel and drive safely.
He advised drivers to reduce their speed and drive carefully, thinking of their families at home, who are always waiting for their return.
NAN reports that many drivers and their unions graced the occasion, including members of the Association of Independent Transporters (AIT), Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Nigeria Police Force, and NYSC Corps members.
